Refugee and Immigration Shabbat

Refugee and Immigration Shabbat

Join us for this special shabbat, in partnership with the Social Justice Committee and with Guest Speaker Jeremy Robbins, JD, Executive Director of the American Immigration Council and BHS member, as we reflect on our shared commitment to welcoming the stranger and supporting those seeking refuge.

Through the lens of his work at the American Immigration Council and his years of leadership in advocacy and policy, Jeremy will offer insight on the immigration and refugee crisis in New York City, exploring the current challenges, policies, and opportunities. The Council works to advance fair and just policies that protect the rights of immigrants and foster a more welcoming America.

About Jeremy Robbins: Jeremy Robbins is the Executive Director of the American Immigration Council. Previously, Jeremy spent more than a decade building New American Economy, the think tank and advocacy organization founded by Michael Bloomberg to make the economic case for smarter immigration policies, as NAE's first and sole Executive Director. Prior to that, Jeremy served as a policy advisor and special counsel in the Office of New York City Mayor, a judicial law clerk on the United States Court of Appeals, a Robert L. Bernstein International Human Rights Fellow working on prisoners' rights issues in Argentina, and a litigation associate at WilmerHale in Boston, where he was part of the firm’s team representing six Bosnian men detained at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Jeremy received a JD from Yale Law School and a BA in political science from Brown University.

About the American Immigration Council: The American Immigration Council works to strengthen America by shaping how America thinks about and acts towards immigrants and immigration and by working toward a more fair and just immigration system that opens its doors to those in need of protection and unleashes the energy and skills that immigrants bring. The Council brings together problem solvers and employs four coordinated approaches to advance change—litigation, research, legislative and administrative advocacy, and communications. In January 2022, the Council and New American Economy merged to combine a broad suite of advocacy tools to better expand and protect the rights of immigrants, more fully ensure immigrants’ ability to succeed economically, and help make the communities they settle in more welcoming.

Refugee Shabbat will coincide with Shir Shabbat.

Fighting Hate at Home: Combatting Antisemitism with ADL

Fighting Hate at Home: Combatting Antisemitism with ADL

RSVP here to join this discussion.

This year’s Anti-Defamation League’s Antisemitism Audit identified 9,354 assaults, harassment and vandalism incidents — adding up to an average of more than 25 targeted anti-Jewish incidents a day in 2024. That’s more than one every hour.

Bringing it closer to home: there were 2,156 incidents in New York and New Jersey combined, representing nearly one-fourth of the total incidents across the U.S. This is a 5% increase from 2023 and 500+% increase over the last 10 years.

Join Rabbi Serge Lippe as he moderates a discussion with ADL NY-NJ Associate Regional Directors David White and Tova Chatzinoff-Rosenfeld, who will talk us through these alarming findings — with a focus on New York City — and present meaningful steps our community can take to combat antisemitism.

Founded in 1913, ADL’s timeless mission is “to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all.”

The ADL New York/New Jersey team responds to acts of antisemitism and hate, builds community through meaningful partnerships, advocates for local policies and provides education programs for schools and workplaces.
