For over 40 years, Brooklyn Heights Synagogue (BHS) has been a place of refuge and care for our city's homeless.

As a founding member of the New York City Emergency Shelter Network, we’re proud to operate a homeless shelter four nights a week (Monday-Thursday) that provides up to 10 men with a hot meal, a safe place to sleep, and—just as importantly—a sense of community and dignity.

Prior to their arrival at our Shelter, CAMBA, Brooklyn’s largest social service agency, ensures that all shelter guests are all screened for the following: visual assessment for alcohol and drug sobriety and general hygiene, health assessment including respiratory and COVID symptoms and TB, psychiatric and psychosocial evaluations by a competent professional as well as screening all guests for weapons and contraband prior to leaving CAMBA's drop in center.

The men we serve come from all walks of life, united by the shared hardship of homelessness. Some are working during the day but lack a safe place to return to at night. Without our beds, many would have no alternative.

With the exception of an overnight security guard, our shelter is entirely powered by volunteers, from BHS members to our extended network of friends, including other local synagogues, churches, schools, and community groups.

From home-cooked meals delivered daily by members of the community to friendly faces serving and joining our guests for dinner, to our dedicated overnight volunteers who spend the evening to ensure everything goes according to plan, Brooklyn Heights Synagogue is more than a house of worship—it’s a home for those who need one most.

Thank you so much to those who have volunteered for Shelter. Whether you purchased items for the pantry, signed up as an evening coordinator or to prep/serve dinner, or volunteered overnight, your contribution makes a big difference to the community we support. We’re deeply grateful for the collective spirit that makes this program possible. View our FY2024 Shelter Season volunteers here.

If you're interested in volunteering, there are a variety of ways you can support our Shelter.

COOK/DELIVER DINNER

Volunteer to prepare dinner at home or order it to be delivered to the Shelter, for up to 12 individuals. The meal should be delivered to the Shelter kitchen no later than 6:30pm (and include a description of the meal and instructions for serving/heating). We have the ability to reheat food in our toaster oven or a microwave.

COOKING GUIDELINES

SET-UP & SERVE DINNER

Volunteer to help set the table before the guests arrive and then serve and join our guests for dinner and lively conversation.

Families with young children of 5+ (one family per night) can help set the table before the guests arrive (6:30-7pm). Those with older children of 13+ may stay to help serve dinner and eat with our guests. Kids 13+ can also set up and serve without their parents, which is a great way to earn community service hours.

OVERNIGHT STAY

In addition to an overnight security guard on duty, the Shelter requires two adult volunteers spend the night in order to operate. Two people may sign up together or an individual will be paired with another volunteer. Volunteers arrive at 7:00pm and are met by an Evening Coordinator who shows them the ropes. They assist with set up, help serve dinner and clean up afterwards. The next morning, they get up early and are free to leave by 6:30am. A child at least the age of B’Mitzvah may spend the night with a parent, or an adult approved by the child’s parents.

HELP FILL OUR PANTRY

Help ensure our pantry remains stocked by purchasing items from our wish list. You can have items delivered directly to the Shelter or drop them off in person on weekdays during our regular operating hours.

MAKE A CONTRIBUTION

As linked at the top of our page, you can support our Shelter by making a 100% tax-deductible donation. These funds help offset the cost of our security personnel that ensure everyone is safe and sound through the night as well as allow us to continue to stock our kitchen pantry.
