A Kol Bo Community

Stretched to Its Limits

Our growth has created real and urgent obstacles as well as opportunities. Right now, we cannot gather a substantial portion of the congregation in a single social space fully on a beautiful spring day. Our staff must cut many events short to prepare for the next one, or rotate them between different spaces weekly, which prevents a feeling of comfort and reliability. On cold and rainy days, we literally cannot keep our members warm and dry while they wait for their children. Even Oneg, an essential part of Jewish community, is cramped, driving members to leave early.

Each of these obstacles is a wonderful result of the health and vibrancy of our community and gives us the opportunity right now but it is time for us to address them. Therefore, we are in the process of the New Heights campaign. This campaign will allow us to:

  • enlarge our community spaces to improve education and other
    essential experiences;
  • create spaces to gather informally and bond over families, faith, and community involvement; and
  • fulfill the potential of the work that began in the 2013 Growing Together campaign by effectively merging our two buildings (131 and 127 Remsen Street).

Every member of our congregation has an important part to play in the campaign, and we will work together to find the right fit for each of us, so we can all continue on this journey together, as one community. Visit the Progress page to see how we’re doing!

Brooklyn Heights Synagogue is welcoming, inclusive, creative and progressive. We are a living, breathing example of a Kol Bo (all enter) Jewish community, and together we have built something greater than the sum of its parts; bigger than our founders could have imagined at their first minyan in 1960, or when they stretched to 131 Remsen; even bigger than most of us envisioned when we joined.

We continue to be fruitful and multiply. Our burgeoning collective rightfully expects so much from BHS—it is our Jewish place in this world and in our diverse community. It is a platform for our activism and generosity, and a second home where audacious hospitality creates a feeling of inclusion for members and non-members, alike. We proudly meet every one of these expectations and, as a result, the BHS community needs to expand its home so our “family” has the room it needs. We are delighted to be in a growth mode – and delighted to invite all to make our vision into a reality.
